The Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive is held annually the week before the Carolina/Clemson football game. The drive comes at the start of the holiday season when the blood supply typically weakens. Over the past 27 years of competition, the universities have collected more than 90,000 units of blood, potentially saving more than 270,000 lives. The Carolina contingent has donated approximately 45,000 units of blood for this highly anticipated event and took home the trophy last year with a total of 4,079 presenting donors to Clemson’s 3,041 presenting donors. While the University of South Carolina has won the blood drive competition the past four years in a row, Clemson University currently leads the competition with 14 blood drive wins to Carolina’s 13 wins.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information about blood donation.
