“The American Red Cross is greatly appreciative to Carolina and Clemson and the many students and fans who have demonstrated their school spirit over the past 24 years by donating blood,” said Jamie Muldrow, communications manager for the American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region. “We’re grateful to the schools for the opportunity to take the rivalry off the football field and use it toward the common goal of saving lives.”

The Carolina/Clemson Blood Drive is held annually the week before the Carolina/Clemson football game. The drive comes at the start of the holiday season when the blood supply typically weakens. Over the past 24 years of competition, the universities have collected over 80,000 units of blood, potentially saving more than 240,000 lives. The Carolina contingent has donated approximately 40,000 units of blood for this highly anticipated event and took home the trophy last year with a total of 4,039 presenting donors to Clemson’s 3,351 presenting donors.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet height and weight requirements. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit redcrossblood.org for more information.
