ABC Columbia and WCOS 97.5 FM Encourage Blood Donors to Make a New Resolution, Give Blood

Columbia, S.C.—ABC Columbia and WCOS 97.5 FM will sponsor their annual New Year’s blood drive 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at PLEX Indoor Sports, 741 Fashion Drive, at the Village at Sandhill. The need for blood remains constant, and ABC Columbia and WCOS encourage eligible donors to make a new resolution in 2010, give blood. 

All presenting donors will receive an American Red Cross aluminum water bottle and a chance to win lunch at Hudson’s Smokehouse with Alicia Barnes and Daniel Seaman from ABC Columbia and Jonathan Rush and Tumbleweed from WCOS. Presenting blood donors will also be treated to free food and a chance to win prizes from ABC Columbia and WCOS during the blood drive. 

To schedule an appointment, donors may go online to givelife.org and enter sponsor code:  ABCCOLUMBIA. Everyone must have proof of identification to give blood.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. The American Red Cross South Carolina Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to patients in 54 hospitals. Approximately 500 people need to give blood each weekday to meet hospital demand.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements
