Fans cheer for different teams but come together to help patients in need through the American Red Cross

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 27, 2010) – The University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville unite for the eighth year to encourage fans to help save lives this summer by donating blood through the American Red Cross. From August 2 through September 2, fans can honor their favorite team when they donate blood at any American Red Cross mobile blood drive or donation center in Kentucky.

Last year, more than 7,200 fans and blood donors gave more than 7,400 pints of blood during the month-long UK & UofL Governor's Cup Blood Drive promotion period. This year the American Red Cross hopes even more UK and UofL fans will support the cause to help replenish the summer blood supply when blood donations tend to decline.

"This is a great way to show school spirit, help save lives through blood donation and support the increased need for blood products during the summer," said Linda Voss, Chief Executive Officer at the River Valley Region Blood Services of the American Red Cross. "We encourage all eligible donors to donate during this campaign. All fans who present to donate are winners in the fight to help save lives – no matter which team they support."

Fans who present to donate from August 2 through September 2 at any American Red Cross mobile blood drive or donation center in Kentucky will be entered for a chance to win two tickets to the Governor's Cup football game on Saturday, September 4 at 3:30 p.m. at Papa John's Stadium in Louisville, Ky. and will receive a special edition Governor's Cup T-shirt. Other prizes include a chance to win autographed footballs, limited edition school posters and other school prizes.

The first opportunity to bleed red or blue will be at two special event blood drives on August 2.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation's blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
