Winners of the Spirit of the Red Cross Scholarship Program
Each year, high school students in Oregon and Washington account for nearly 25,000 pints of donated blood. As the academic year ends, these critical blood donations decline, as students embark on summer activities and vacations.
To help maintain the blood supply during the summer months, the American Red Cross created the High School Blood Drive Challenge. This year’s High School Challenge involved more than 70 high schools in Multnomah, Clark, Washington, Clackamas, Linn and Marion Counties. In addition to recognition for participating schools, the 2010 High School Challenge announced a new benefit of participating: the Spirit of the Red Cross Scholarship Program.
This program is an opportunity to award up to seven students with scholarships of $1,000 each. Along with completing the essay questions specified on the scholarship application, eligible students must demonstrate a high level of dedication and leadership, represent the mission of the American Red Cross and actively participate in their own school’s blood drives, as well as other blood drives outside of their school.
The Spirit of the Red Cross Scholarship applications have been reviewed and the American Red Cross is proud to announce the winners for 2010.
