Santa Cruz Warriors Hosting Blood Drive

Northern California Blood Services Region

January 15, 2013

The Santa Cruz Warriors aren’t wasting any time giving back to their new community. The first-year NBA Development League team is hosting a blood drive and general community event at the Kaiser Permanente Arena on January 19 with the local American Red Cross.

“Blood saves lives, it’s that simple,” said Jim Weyermann, president of the Santa Cruz Warriors. “There is nothing more important than having enough blood available to treat emergency cases of violence and accidents. That’s why we are putting the weight of our team behind this blood drive. It is critical that we are able to meet the need and help save lives.”

Blood donors at this special event will have an opportunity to meet Warriors players.

The winter months are traditionally a difficult time for the Red Cross to collect blood. Vacations, illnesses and inclement weather work together to prevent regular blood donors from giving this time of year.

“During winter, we really rely on local organizations stepping up to help ensure that blood is available year-round,” American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region CEO Jeff Meyer said. “The Santa Cruz Warriors’ willingness to sponsor this blood drive speaks to their passion for community service and desire to help others.”

Representatives from the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter will be on-hand to conduct hands-only CPR demonstrations and will give talks on disaster preparedness. Drawings will be held every hour for individual disaster kits.

“We are so pleased to be working with the Santa Cruz Warriors to bring another occasion to the people of Santa Cruz to donate blood, experience giving the gift of life as well as learn to be prepared should an emergency or disaster occur.” said Rita Chick, CEO of the American Red Cross Santa Cruz County Chapter.

The event also will feature a group of local Superstorm Sandy volunteer responders, who will talk about what it’s like to be deployed to a disaster.

The blood drive and community event will be held on Saturday, January 19 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Blood donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance, but “walk-ins” also are welcome.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
