Red Cross Searching for Blood Donors

Northern California Blood Services Region

December 30, 2010

January is typically a difficult month for the American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region to meet its commitment to local hospitals due to a lack of blood donors.  This is often attributed to holiday fatigue, illness and bad weather.

The Red Cross is trying to obtain potential donor attention through a variety of activities.  Cities throughout the Bay Area will be honoring the Red Cross with proclamations, recognizing the need for blood and encouraging residents to give blood.  January is nationally recognized as National Blood Donor Month.

In addition, the Red Cross will hold its 3rd annual Project: Plasma. Throughout January, all presenting blood donors can enter a drawing for a new 50” plasma 3-D HDTV.*  The drawing will take place on Feb. 2, giving the winner time to set up that new TV before the Big Game on Feb. 6.

Daphne’s Greek Café is helping the Red Cross by providing donors with $5 coupons* towards a meal at their local restaurants in Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

The Red Cross operates blood centers in Oakland, Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton, Newark and San Jose.  It also holds mobile blood drives throughout the Bay Area.

Schedule your appointment now or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment.

Individuals who are at least 17 years old (16 with parental permission), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

* Television and coupons are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.
