Run for Blood and help save lives this summer
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The American Red Cross Run for Blood Quarter Marathon, 5k Run/Walk and Community Blood Drive will be held Saturday, July 26 at Lake Calhoun. Presented by Smiths Medical, the event will help build awareness of the constant need for blood and help raise funds for the North Central Blood Services Region.
“Smiths Medical is proud to be associated with the Red Cross organization’s lifesaving mission. Our employees are committed to making a measureable difference in building stronger communities where we live and work,” said Jeff McCaulley, President and CEO, Smiths Medical.
The Red Cross helps people like Kate Ross. Ross was in a tragic car accident in December 2009 and needed blood to survive. Weary from the rigors of working and going to school full-time, Ross fell asleep while driving. She hit a guardrail going 60 mph, and 40 feet of guardrail penetrated her calf and thigh. After seven days in the hospital and eight surgeries, her leg was amputated above the knee.
“I’m so grateful for the people who donated blood. If they hadn’t, I might not be alive today,” Ross said. “I have become a blood donor myself and I’m training so that I can participate in the Run for Blood next year. I encourage everyone to get involved – it’s a great way to give back and give hope to someone in need!”
Online registration for the Run for Blood is available at ARCNMN.ejoinme.org/2014RunforBlood. Same day registrations to participate in the Run/Walk and to donate blood are also welcome.
While the need for blood is constant, the supply isn’t – especially during the summer months,” said Geoff Kaufmann, CEO of the North Central Blood Services Region. “Whether you run competitively, walk with a group of family or friends, donate blood, or just want to show your support for the Red Cross, there is something for everyone at this event."
