Red Cross ready for 2013 Minnesota State Fair

North Central

August 22, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Minn. – The American Red Cross is counting on Minnesota State fairgoers to help save lives by donating blood and learning about disaster preparedness. New this year, each day people will have the opportunity to give blood, play “Disaster Draw Down” a Pictionary-like game about emergency readiness, and complete a survey about their own disaster preparedness.

The Red Cross has an urgent need for blood, especially type O negative, A negative and B negative. To help boost inventory before, during and after the Labor Day weekend, a blood drive will be held every day of the fair. To show our thanks, all presenting blood donors will receive a Red Cross hand sanitizer and as part of the Summer of Stories campaign, blood donors between Aug. 26 and Sept.9, 2013, will have a chance to win one of five $1,000 American Express gift cards.

At the Red Cross booth, inside the Health Fair 11 building: fairgoers can participate in Disaster Draw Down, a fun, interactive and educational game where fairgoers draw disaster and preparedness related items for the audience to guess. Also, fairgoers can complete a survey about their own disaster preparedness to help the Red Cross build a more resilient community.  Game and survey participants will receive a Red Cross Preparedness Kit-ten refrigerator magnet and detailed preparedness tips. And, in keeping with Red Cross tradition at the fair, the Red Cross will continue to provide free blood pressure screenings. (We suggest getting a screening before eating cheese curds!)
