Celebrate Red Cross Month this March by Donating Blood

March 1, 2011 (Ashley, PA)– When someone needs lifesaving blood or the comfort of a helping hand, the American Red Cross is there.  In celebration of Red Cross Month this March we hope you will join us in making a difference in your community by donating blood.  Committed volunteer blood donors can make the difference between a plentiful blood supply and a shortage which we’ve seen this Winter.

Founded by Clara Barton in 1881 after being inspired by the humanitarian concepts of the Swiss-based international Red Cross movement, the American Red Cross today reaches virtually all segments of our society.  Red Cross Month is a time set aside to recognize those who volunteer their time in the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor.

Local Red Cross chapters focus on safety and accident prevention, public health, disaster relief and service to military families. Red Cross Blood Services is a local blood supplier with the advantage of nationwide reach and experience, fully committed to serving the blood needs of our community.

“The Red Cross is proud to salute our blood and financial donors, volunteers, sponsors, hospitals and community partners during Red Cross Month,” said Tony Ferlenda, CEO Northeastern Pennsylvania Region.  “While this month is dedicated to honoring those who help us fulfill our mission of helping save lives each day, we thank them for their commitment throughout the entire year.”

Each day, 351 units of blood must be collected throughout the Northeastern Pennsylvania Region to meet the needs of 29 area hospitals. Without blood donors – those silent heroes who volunteer their time to roll up their sleeves and save lives, this would not be possible as there is no substitute for blood.

To help get people out of the winter doldrums and into the habit of giving, the American Red Cross Blood Services Northeastern Pennsylvania Region is offering individuals who come out and donate blood and platelets in March a chance to win a vacation getaway.  Presenting donors can enter to win an 8 day, 7 night stay courtesy of Sundance Vacations and a $200. Visa gift card for expenses.

Eligible volunteer blood donors are asked to please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.orgto find a blood drive and to make appointments.  Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in PA), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to give blood. Positive identification is required at the time of donation.

About the American Red Cross:

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross has been the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States for more than 50 years. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure that no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. The American Red Cross Blood Services - Northeast Division must distribute approximately 3,000 units of blood each day just to meet the basic needs of area patients. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
