The Boston Bruins, American Red Cross & TD Bank Team Up for the "Bleed Black & Gold Blood Drive"

Massachusetts

February 26, 2010

On Monday, March 1, the Boston Bruins, American Red Cross and TD Bank will be hosting the second “Bleed Black and Gold Blood Drive” from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on the fourth floor of the TD Garden concourse (100 Legends Way, Boston, MA 02114).

In addition to helping save a life, each presenting donor will receive a long-sleeve Boston Bruins t-shirt as well as an opportunity to win Boston Bruins autographed memorabilia. The Boston Bruins Ice Girls and the Boston Bruins mascot, Blades, will also be at the arena to meet fans and take photographs.

TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank, will provide scores of volunteers to support the event. More than 100 of the bank’s stores have been distributing materials and reaching out to its customers, employees and partners for weeks, encouraging them to donate.

To make an appointment to donate blood at the “Bleed Black and Gold Blood Drive,” please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or log onto www.redcrossblood.org.

Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, however only five percent of those eligible to donate blood actually do so. The donated blood is used for surgical procedures, organ transplants, trauma and chemotherapy. For some patients, such as the victim of an automobile accident, the need for blood is sudden. For others, ongoing transfusions are needed to help sustain lifesaving medical treatment.

The American Red Cross has been a primary supplier of lifesaving blood products in the United States for more than 50 years. The American Red Cross Blood Services -- Northeast Division supplies a wide range of blood components, plasma derivatives, and transfusion services to over 200 hospitals and other medical facilities throughout Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut. It serves the blood needs of more than 9 million residents and many thousand more who travel to New England for care at many of the nation’s top medical centers.

Individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.  Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.

The Bruins begin a two-game homestand, Tuesday, March 2 when they take on the Montreal Canadiens at 7:00 p.m. ET and then Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday, March 4 at 7:00 p.m. ET.

The 2009-2010 Boston Bruins season is presented by the Massachusetts State Lottery. Fans interested in learning more about Boston Bruins players, or ticket options, should visit the team website at www.bostonbruins.com or call 617-624-BEAR.
