American Red Cross asks donors to help maintain summer blood supply

What are you doing this summer? The American Red Cross is your connection to helping save lives by donating blood and hanging out with friends at the Fifth Annual Rock ‘N Roll Up Your Sleeve blood drive on Wednesday, June 22 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.  at the Peoria Riverplex.

The Red Cross is dedicated to connecting youth to lifesaving causes and is partnering with area high school students to raise awareness about the constant need for blood. Music lovers will have a chance to help save lives while hanging out with friends, listening to music and enjoying a live performance by local band Coco Loco.

“Blood donations often decline over the summer because donors are busy with summer activities and schools are on summer break,” said Shelly Heiden, CEO of American Red Cross Blood Services Heart of America Region. “The Rock ‘N Roll Up Your Sleeve blood drive is a great way to remind our high school and college donors about the importance of donating blood year-round.”

All presenting donors will receive a Live. Give. Life.  mobile screen cleaner code-card featuring a unique PIN number to redeem online for a chance to win some fun prizes. Those donor prizes range from a 2 song music download, mini portable speakers, to a Kindle™ Reader or Asus Eee Seashell Netbook. And, all presenting donors are also eligible to win an Apple iPad2. Rock out where ever you go!

About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
