Spartans Vow to Go Green. Beat Blue. Give Red.

East Lansing, MI, January 27 – It’s that time of year again when the American Red Cross encourages Michigan State University students, staff, alumni and fans to show their Spartan pride by rolling up their sleeves to help save lives during MSU’s annual blood challenge against the University of Michigan January 30 – February 24.

“These two schools have such an intense rivalry,” said Sharon Jaksa, CEO of the American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “Bringing the competitiveness off the field and into our blood drives is a great way to get students interested in donating.”

After winning the annual MSU-PSU blood challenge for the first time in six years this past November, the American Red Cross is hoping the Spartans keep the momentum going during the MSU-UM challenge.  The Wolverines won last year and the Spartans hope to reclaim bragging rights.

The goal for the Spartans is to collect about 1,400 units of blood during the four-week period.  In an effort to increase donor turnout, the Red Cross is offering everyone who comes out to donate free pizza from Cottage Inn, a special long-sleeve t-shirt with the slogan “Go Green.  Beat Blue.  Give Red.” and a chance to win great prizes, including an xBox 360 from Best Buy.

The challenge will take place at blood drives throughout the MSU campus. To learn more about the MSU-UM Blood Challenge or to make an appointment to donate, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter sponsor code: MSU.
