Red Cross offers free T-shirt to all presenting donors
This Thanksgiving, give something that means something. Give blood.
Lansing, MI—November 25— For many people, Thanksgiving is a time-honored tradition of giving thanks with friends and relatives. As a “thank you” to start the giving season, the American Red Cross will offer a short-sleeved, Red Cross T-shirt to all presenting blood and platelet donors from Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013.*
“Hospital patients don’t get a holiday from needing blood and platelets,” said Todd Kulman, Communications Program Manager for the Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “Blood donations are used to treat cancer patients, trauma victims, premature babies, organ-transplant patients and those living with chronic blood diseases each and every day.”
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. On average, the Red Cross must collect about 15,000 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
Blood and platelet donations helped to save the life of Cody Hermeling after a tragic car accident. During his first days in the intensive care unit, doctors gave Cody a 3 percent chance of survival. Over time, with the combination of expert medical care and 187 units of generously donated blood and blood components, he survived. Cody and his family and friends will be celebrating life and giving thanks to blood and platelet donors this holiday season.
Blood donors are encouraged to invite a loved one to follow in their footsteps and donate blood this holiday season.
