11th Annual Battle of the Badges to Be Held in Lansing
Local Fire and Police departments join forces to save lives
June 22, 2011 – Lansing, MI – Lansing-area fire and police departments are joining forces once again for the 11th Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Challenge. The challenge kicks off Saturday, June 25 when both sides take the battle to the court at the YMCA West Lansing.
“While we hope to win the challenge again this year, the patients in need of blood products are the true winners,” Lansing Fire Chief Tom Cochran said. “We’re honored to partner with the Red Cross again to help raise awareness of the great need for blood during the summer months.”
Everyone who comes out to donate at the Lansing Donor Center, 1729 E. Saginaw, and specific drives in the Lansing area June 28 - July 9 will have a chance to vote for their team of choice – Fire or Police. The winning team will receive a traveling trophy with their name engraved on a placard.
This year’s kick-off event will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 25 with an opening ceremony featuring Q106.1fm’s MoJo Sideshow, Police Chief Teresa Szymanski, Fire Chief Tom Cochran and testimonials from those who donate blood and those who are recipients. The half-time show will feature a kid’s relay race, games and prizes for everyone.
Every presenting donor during the challenge will receive a goody bag that includes a Red Cross t-shirt, discount on tickets to Michigan International Speedway, coupons from local retailers - such as Cottage Inn, Grand Traverse Pie Co., the Lansing City Market, and Iorio’s Gelateria - and other donated items. The goal for this year’s challenge is to collect 700 units of blood, helping to maintain a healthy blood supply this summer.
Donors will also have a chance to win Common Ground passes, a $500 Best Buy gift card, a $125 Meijer gas card, and a $250 Meijer gift card. ‘Like’ the challenge on Facebook (facebook.com/GLRBattle) and you could win a special Red Cross gift!
There is a need for all blood types; particularly O negative, A negative and B negative, which are currently at critically-low levels in our community. These critically-low blood supplies are resulting in orders being placed on back order; in addition to only filling hospital’s O negative orders for “Transfuse Only”. This means hospitals requesting type O negative must have an immediate and specific need for a specific patient.
You can honor our everyday heroes by becoming one. Make an appointment to donate blood or platelets during the 2011 Battle of the Blood Challenge today by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or visiting redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: battle2011.
