American Red Cross Encourages Eligible Donors to Donate Blood

Flint, MI - The winter season can be a very difficult time to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients. As the number of blood donors typically decreases during the winter months, it is even more important that people who are eligible to donate come forward to make an appointment and give blood. Because of poor weather conditions, the American Red Cross has experienced a shortfall of 28,000 units since the end of January.

“We would not be able to succeed in our mission of saving lives if it weren’t for our generous sponsors, donors and volunteers,” Sharon Jaksa, CEO of the Great Lakes Region said. “We encourage donors to donate and help us replenish the units lost when winter storms forced the cancellation of several blood drives.”

The American Red Cross Great Lakes Region encourages donors to give the gift of life by joining forces with community businesses. Every month in 2011, a new donor will be chosen through a drawing to win a month’s worth of free groceries from Meijer, a value up to $250. All presenting donors between now and February 28, will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of tickets to NCAA Division I Men's Basketball 2nd and 3rd Round playoff games in Chicago.

All presenting blood and platelet donors at the Flint Donor Center will also be placed in a drawing to win one (1) of four (4) three-month memberships to Hurley Health & Fitness Center.

Give the gift of life like Bryan Rock, a donor from Flint, Mich.,  who is the lucky winner of a Hurley Health and Fitness Center three month gym membership. Rock donates because “he knows the importance and loves giving back.”

Please help replenish the local blood supply by donating at your local donor center:
