Add the Gift of Life to Your Holiday Giving List

Kalamazoo, MI—December 19—The American Red Cross is once again partnering with the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites to help save lives this holiday season.  All eligible donors are encouraged to roll-up their sleeves and make an appointment for the special holiday blood drive, Tuesday, December 24.

“Unfortunately, patients don’t get a holiday from needing blood products,” said Jane Emanuel, Donor Recruitment Representative with the Great Lakes Region.  “The winter months are a particularly difficult time for blood collections. We need donors to come in and give before they get too busy with shopping and holiday parties.”

The annual Holiday Blood Drive will be held Tuesday, December 24 from 9:00AM – 2:45PM at the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites (100 W. Michigan Ave.) in Kalamazoo.  Parking for donors is free on the Radisson Ramp only and childcare is provided.  There will also be holiday music and special door prizes to get everyone into the holiday spirit.  Also, everyone who comes out to donate will receive a free, 2-ounce brick of coffee and a coupon redeemable for one free pound of coffee from participating Dunkin’ Donuts (while supplies last).

Every two seconds, someone in the U-S needs blood.  On average, the Red Cross must collect 15,000 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,700 hospitals and transfusion centers around the country.  Blood donations are used to treat cancer patients, trauma victims, premature babies and those living with chronic blood diseases each and every day.

About the American Red Cross

The Great Lakes Blood Services Region serves 65 counties, and needs to collect about 650 units of blood a day to meet patient need in hospitals. In addition to supplying about 40 percent of the nation’s blood, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills, provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. 12/13AP605
