American Red Cross, Meijer Continue Grocery Giveaway
Fennville Community Blood Donor Wins Gift Card
Lansing, MI–The American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region, in partnership with Meijer, has rewarded one lucky blood donor with a $250 Meijer gift card for donating blood at a March blood drive.
Throughout the year, the Red Cross has joined forces with Meijer to offer everyone who comes out to donate blood the chance to win free groceries for a month (a $250 value).
Dave Jeffers of Pullman neighbor of Fennville, MI was the lucky March winner. “I realized that I haven’t donated in while and knew it was time”, said Jeffers. “A friend mentioned the blood drive at Fennville High School and the community wanted to pull together.”
On Thursday, March 3, Fennville High School senior Wes Leonard collapsed after making a winning shot to send the Fennville High basketball team to district playoffs. Leonard was rushed to a Holland Hospital, where paramedics performed CPR before he was pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted on March 4 by the Ottawa County medical examiner showed Leonard died of cardiac arrest due to an enlarged heart.
“Our hearts go out to the family of this amazing student, the school and the entire Fennville community. It is great to hear that a blood drive can bring a community together and help save lives at once,” says Nancy VanderRoest, Southwest Donor Recruitment Department Supervisor of the Great Lakes Region. “This was a great way to honor Wes’ memory and we thank Meijer for providing an extra incentive to raise awareness on the importance of blood donation.”
This April, everyone who comes out to donate will have a chance to win a Meijer $250 gift card for groceries. In addition, every presenting donor in April will have a chance to win a spa package for a “Mother’s Day Out” in honor of Mom for Mother’s Day. Both promotions are just one way the Red Cross is hoping to encourage all eligible donors to make an appointment to donate blood.
