American Red Cross, Courtland Center Mall Hold Annual 'Black Friday Blood Drive'
Donors Can Give the Gift of Life…and Toys This Holiday Season
November 25, 2013 – Lansing, MI – The American Red Cross is once again joining forces with the Courtland Center Mall and CARS-108 to help save lives this holiday season. Eligible donors are encouraged to make a blood donation as part of their Thanksgiving weekend plans by taking part in the annual ‘Black Friday’ blood drive on Friday, November 29th.
The ‘Black Friday Blood Drive’ will take place from 9:00AM to 2:45PM at the Courtland Center Mall, 4190 E. Court St., Burton. Everyone who comes out to donate will have the opportunity to select a Christmas gift from the Red Cross ‘toy chest’, which will be donated to the charity of their choice.
“This is a great way to break-up the monotony of the busiest shoping day of the year,” said Colleen O’Callaghan, Donor Recruitment Representative for the American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region. “We’re asking all eligible donors to take a break, lay back and give the gift of life.”
Winter months, and the holidays in particular, are a difficult time for blood collections. People typically travel during the holidays and are not always thinking about donating. Also, inclement weather and icy roadways will sometimes keep donors at home and out of the elements.
“The need for blood is constant and never takes a holiday,” continued O’Callaghan. “Even in the middle of the busy shopping season, the need for blood is there.”

About the American Red Cross
The Great Lakes Blood Services Region serves 65 counties, and needs to collect about 700 units of blood a day to meet patient need in hospitals across the state. In addition to supplying about 40 percent of the nation’s blood, the American Red Cross teaches lifesaving skills, provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization—not a government agency—and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
