Credit Unions Win 5th Annual American Red Cross Blood Challenge
Fifth Annual Invest to Save Lives Challenge Collected 497 Units of Blood

Lansing, MI – The American Red Cross Great Lakes Blood Services Region held its 5th Annual Invest to Save Lives Blood Challenge December 16 – January 7 and the credit unions have claimed bragging rights once again.

The blood challenge, between area banks and credit unions, is held over the holidays to help the Red Cross maintain a healthy blood supply during the tough winter season.

“We were thrilled to be a part of this life-saving challenge,” said Gary May, CEO of Portland Credit Union and co-chair of this year’s challenge. “We won last year, now this year and I believe we can win next year as well. However, the ultimate winners are those who received the units of blood we all collected.”

The friendly competition began in 2004 in an effort to recruit new donors and encourage current donors to donate blood over the holiday season.

“The need for blood never takes a holiday,” said Sharon Jaksa, CEO of the American Red Cross Great Lakes Region Blood Services. “We appreciate all the banks and credit unions in our area that have joined the challenge in an effort to help save lives.”

All presenting donors for this year’s challenge had the chance to win one of three $100 Kroger gift cards.
