Duggar Family Donates Blood at Little Rock Center

Greater Ozarks-Arkansas

February 28, 2010

Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar and the kids welcomed baby 19 earlier than expected on December 10, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Michelle, who had been in the hospital recovering from a gallstone was diagnosed with preeclampsia and underwent an emergency c-section. Daughter Josie Brooklyn was born at 25 weeks weighing 1lb., 6 oz. She experienced serious complications requiring her to be rushed to Arkansas Childrens Hospital. For a while it appeared the micro-preemie baby would have to undergo surgery but she continued to respond to treatment and was able to avoid any invasive procedures. She contnues to improve and is expected to be discharged in late March if all goes well.

Josie's dramatic arrival was featured on 19 Kids and Counting followed by their special visit to the American Red Cross, Lowery Blood Center in Little Rock. Jim Bob approached the GOA Region with the idea of sharing the importance of donating blood with his children. He felt that they would benefit from the first hand experience of helping others by donating as well as perhaps assisting their sister with her blood needs. On January 7th, first time donors Jim Bob, Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger came to the center along with the TLC crew. Their experience was filmed and aired on TLC on Februry 23rd. Jim Bob encouraged viewers to donate blood and his call to action was featured at the show website. Portions of the episode may still be viewed at the following address: http://tlc.discovery.com/tv/duggars/19-kids-and-counting.html .

The family all felt their experience donating blood was positive and worthwhile. When asked each felt they would donate again. Staff members visited with the family about how Red Cross supports our role in this vital community service and presented a stuffed bear for Josie from the GOA team. Thanks to every donor who helps ensure adequate blood supplies are available around the clock for patients when the need arises.
