Red Cross urges blood donations during October, Liver Awareness Month
October is Liver Awareness Month, and the American Red Cross is encouraging people to focus on liver health. Liver transplants are the second most frequent type of organ transplant, with more than 6,000 liver transplants performed annually in the U.S., according to the American Liver Foundation.
When disease necessitates a liver transplant, patients typically require multiple transfusions during surgery. You can help them by committing to being a regular blood donor. To make an appointment to donate blood or to learn more about the blood donation process, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App or visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800 RED CROSS.
To help prevent liver disease, the American Liver Foundation recommends limiting alcohol intake, managing medications appropriately, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly and refraining from smoking. For more information, visit liverfoundation.org.
