THE AMERICAN RED CROSS AND NOVANT HEALTH PRESBYTERIAN MEDICAL CENTER

TEAM UP FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL “12 DAYS OF GIVING”

Experience the true meaning of the holidays this season with the hope and inspiration of the “12 Days of Giving.”  Charlotte-area residents are asked to come out to donate blood or platelets at the Charlotte or Huntersville Red Cross Donor Centers from December 9 – 20, 2013.  In addition to giving the Gift of Life, donors can put a smile on the face of a sick child by donating a toy.  Donors will also learn the many ways blood helps save lives through the stories of current and former patients of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.

Blood and platelet donors can bring new and unwrapped toys to the Red Cross Charlotte or Huntersville Donor Centers through December 27.  The toys will be delivered to Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital during the 2013 holiday season.

The Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides blood to 103 hospitals and needs to have 1,600 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand.  Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day.  There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

How to Donate Blood

Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.  Individuals who are 17 years of age, 16 with parental permission, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
