Red Cross Holiday Blood Drive Honors Child Transplant Recipient
MADISON, Wis. – Celebrate life this holiday season and give blood at the American Red Cross 22nd Annual Holiday Blood Drive on Monday, December 24 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Exhibition Hall at the Alliant Energy Center. This blood drive honors baby Reja, a blood and organ recipient, who was released from the hospital on December 25, 2006 with a second chance at life thanks in part to blood donors. What better way to get into the festive holiday spirit than by giving the greatest gift of all – the gift of life.
In 2006, Reja Von Klopp of Sun Prairie, Wis. was diagnosed with biliary atresia – a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts when she was four months old. After an unsuccessful surgery to repair the bile ducts, she received a liver transplant when she was 7 months old. She was in surgery for 10 hours and received up to three units of red blood cells, three units of plasma and four units of cryoprecipitate. Reja was released from the hospital on Christmas Day 2006.
Join Reja Von Klopp and her family as they share Reja's story of survival and hope along with other special guests like Santa Claus and area musicians. Enjoy a day of great company, good will and lots of great food like pizza, holiday cookies and treats, sub sandwiches and hot cocoa! Eligible donors are encouraged to call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE or go to givebloodgivelife.org to schedule an appointment to donate blood on December 24. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be at least 17 years old, and must weigh at least 110 pounds. All donors will receive a t-shirt and have a chance to enter raffles for many prizes. Parking and childcare are free! Scheduling appointments in advance allows the Red Cross to make donations as convenient as possible for donors who are out and about running last-minute errands.
Donors unable to make the Holiday Blood Drive will have another opportunity to donate blood on December 26 through December 28 at the State Capitol on Capitol Square in Madison from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Walk-ins are welcome. Please call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment today. The gift of life runs through you this holiday season.
