MADISON, WI – The American Red Cross asks donors, family members, co-workers and friends to come in and donate blood at the 21st Annual Holiday Blood Drive on Friday, December 22 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Exhibition Hall in the Alliant Energy Center. What better way to get into the festive holiday spirit than by giving the greatest gift of all – the gift of life.

Every day, more than 38,000 units of red blood cells are needed to treat patients throughout the United States, patients like MaryJane Mabie of Neillsville, Wisc. In 2001, MaryJane was diagnosed with liver disease, and she was told she had three months to live. Through the Living Donor Program at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, MaryJane received a new liver from her daughter Heather, not to mention countless units of blood from volunteer blood donors.

Join MaryJane Mabie as she shares her story of survival and hope along with other special guests like Santa Claus and Bucky Badger. Enjoy a day of great company, good will and lots of great food like pizza, holiday cookies and treats, sub sandwiches and hot cocoa! The Red Cross encourages donors to call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE to schedule and appointment to donate blood on December 22. All donors will receive a tshirt and have a chance to enter raffles for many prizes. Scheduling the drive in advance allows the Red Cross to make donations as convenient as possible for donors who are out and about running last-minute errands.

People in the Madison community play an essential role in maintaining a stable blood supply, which allows patients like MaryJane to receive the blood they need year-round. Unfortunately, the winter months, especially near the holidays, prove to be a difficult time to collect blood. Make donating blood part of the holiday tradition this year. Take a break from shopping, take an hour before work or leave an hour early before traveling to come to the 21st Annual Holiday Blood Drive to donate blood.

Donors unable to make the Holiday Blood Drive will have another opportunity to donate blood on December 26 through December 28 at the State Capitol on Capitol Square in Madison from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Walk-ins are welcome. Please call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE or visit givebloodgivelife.org to make an appointment today. The gift of life runs through you this holiday season.

HOW TO DONATE BLOOD
