The American Red Cross Arizona Blood Services Region has expanded its mobile platelet collections to Saddlebrooke and the surrounding area.
The first platelet drive in that area will be in Saddlebrooke at Mountain View Country Club, 38759 S. Mountain View Blvd., Nov. 23 from 7 a.m. to noon. Appointments are available by calling 520-917-2847.
The Red Cross encourages those who have never donated platelets and are interested in doing so to come to the platelet drive for a 10-minute prescreening process to determine their eligibility.
During the screening, persons will give a blood sample for later testing. A certain number of platelets must be present in the sample to meet eligibility requirements. All those who complete the pre-screening process will be contacted by phone with the test results. Persons do not need appointments for the pre-screening test.
Generally, platelet donors must weight at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and be at least 18 years old.
Platelets are used in cancer treatments, organ transplants, treatment of blood disorders and other surgeries.
A platelet donation takes one-and-a-half hours to two-and-a-half hours. Donors have the option to watch a movie, listen to music or simply relax during the donation process.
Platelet donations were available only at donor centers in Tucson until last year, when the Red Cross started mobile platelet collections in Green Valley.
If you are interested in sponsoring a platelet drive in your community, call 520-917-2847.
