TUCSON, Nov.23, 2009 -- The American Red Cross Arizona Blood Services Region announced today the purchase of the former KLA-Tencor building at 3740 E. Universal Way in Tucson.
The Arizona Blood Services Region will use the 60,000-square-foot building as a new administrative headquarters and blood storage and distribution center. It anticipates moving into its new location in June 2010.
The building, constructed in 1999, was purchased for $5.3 million by national headquarters biomedical services.
The Region is currently housed in a building at 222 S. Cherry Avenue in Tucson, and in rented office space in two other locations in Tucson. The new facility will allow the region to consolidate its entire Tucson staff under one roof and will give the organization room to grow. The Cherry Avenue facility will be offered for sale after the organization moves.
The Region’s earlier plan was to construct a new building to serve as its headquarters on purchased land at 6255 S. Palo Verde Road in Tucson. In light of the economic downturn, the Red Cross determined that it would be more cost efficient to purchase and remodel an existing building. The undeveloped site will be sold.
The Region, which employs about 237 staff, supplies blood and blood products to 26 hospitals in Arizona. It has collected blood in Arizona for more than 50 years, operating for most of that time from its location on Cherry Avenue.
The Region’s two blood donor centers in Tucson and its operations center in Phoenix will remain at their current locations. The blood donor centers are at 7139 E. Broadway and 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd. The Phoenix operation is at 3321 E. Atlanta Ave.
