American Red Cross announces iPad promotion

When “uGive” blood or platelets April 1 – 30 you could win an iPad2

(April 3, 2012)- uGive blood? uCould win an iPad2!

Five 16GB iPad2 Wi-FI/3G devices are up for grabs during April at American Red Cross blood drives and blood and platelet donor centers.

Present to donate blood or double red cells in April and you’re automatically entered to win one of the iPad2 devices.   Each week, all presenting platelet donors at the region’s donor centers in Roanoke, Lynchburg and Blacksburg, will be entered to win one of the four remaining iPad2s.

In addition, blood and double red cell donors from April 1 through 15 will earn bonus points in the 2012 Red Cross Donor Rewards Program (redcrossblood.org/redcrossrewards).

According to Bob Eaton, CEO of the American Red Cross, Appalachian Blood Services Region, the Red Cross anticipates that its iPad2 promotion will excite potential donors during a time when the public may not be as aware of the ongoing need for donors.

“There is a constant, ongoing need for blood and platelet donations year-round, not just during the cold winter or hot summer months. Each weekday, the Appalachian Region needs to have at least 300 blood and 30 platelet donors to help meet the needs of patients in the hospitals we serve. There is no artificial blood or drug that can replace the blood or platelet donation made by a volunteer blood donor,” Eaton commented. “Although medical personnel are highly trained and have access to the most modern equipment, when blood or platelet transfusions are needed, the supply comes from volunteer donors.”

He added that while 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, less than 10 percent of those eligible do so annually.

Drawing winners will be notified by phone within one calendar week of the end date of the promotion.  Prizes are not transferrable and not redeemable for cash.

For your convenience, you may now schedule blood donation appointments online at www.redcrossblood.org
