American Red Cross Blood Services Headquarters, Donation Center Moving to Shelby County
(BIRMINGHAM, AL, March 6, 2012) - The American Red Cross Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region has announced that it will move its regional headquarters and donation center from downtown Birmingham to the Shelby County community of Indian Springs.
The American Red Cross will move its headquarters and close the Ridge Park donation center in Birmingham between the dates of March 16-19, 2012. The Ridge Park donation center will remain open during its normal operating hours through Friday, March 16, when operations will transfer to the new Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region Headquarters and Donation Center location at Caldwell Trace (700 Caldwell Trace, Birmingham, AL 35242). The first day of operation for the donation center at the new Caldwell Trace location will be Monday, March 19.
The Caldwell Trace location was selected for a number of reasons, but foremost was its convenience and proximity to the bulk of donors who formerly gave at the Ridge Park site in downtown Birmingham. The new Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region Headquarters and Donation Center is located approximately half a mile south of the intersection of Valleydale Road and Caldwell Mill Road, or just south of the Caldwell Shopping Center. Hours at the new donation center at Caldwell Trace will be as follows:
- Monday-Tuesday: 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.
- Wednesday-Thursday: 7:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
- Friday: 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Whole blood donors who wish to continue donating at a downtown location may now donate at the UAB Donation Center, located in the UAB North Pavilion (1802 6th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233), near Starbuck’s. The hours at the UAB Donation Center are Monday through Friday, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reserved free parking will be made available for blood donors at the UAB Donation Center. There are dedicated parking spots reserved for blood donors at the University Hospital North Pavilion Lobby entrance conveniently located at the corner of 6th Avenue South and 18th Street.
Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region Chief Executive Officer said the move to Caldwell Trace marks a new era for the American Red Cross blood in Alabama.
“We are truly excited about the new facility and our ability to locate to a site that is more convenient for more of our donors,” said Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region Chief Executive Officer Mark Beddingfield. “The new facility is the ‘perfect fit’ for our region, and we’re excited about the way in which this move will position us for future successes in fulfilling the mission of our organization.”
The American Red Cross, Blood Services, Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region , which supplies blood to approximately 100 hospitals, needs 600 blood donors each day in order to meet the needs of patients in the region. Blood donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent) and weigh at least 110 pounds.
