Can I Be A Blood Donor?
In general, blood donors must...
- Be in general good health.
- Be at least 17 years old in most states
- Weigh at least 110 pounds.
- Have not donated blood in the last 56 days.
- Maintain a healthy iron level in your diet
- Hydrate – drink an extra 16 oz of liquid before and after your donation
- Have a healthy meal before your donation – avoid foods high in fat just prior to donation
- Remember to bring your ID!
I am 19 years old. Today was the first time that I've donated blood. I was super nervous but the people there made me feel much calmer. I really hate needles but just thinking that I could save someone's life made me overcome my fear. I am going to continue donating from now on. There is no better feeling than knowing you are helping the world, one step at a time.
New Milford, NJ
I always sign up to donate blood and eat healthy and do everything right, but I never have enough iron in my blood to donate. I've gone to at least 8 blood drives and have only recently been able to donate blood. I've donated 3 times already! I plan my meals and my day around local blood drives because I know that it's important, especially for me because I'm O positive!!
When I was younger I almost died in the hospital due to almost bleeding to death and had to have a blood transfusion, to me giving blood is kinda a way to help someone else who needs blood as bad as I did that day, not only that I like knowing that I'm helping other people, I even got my fiance to start donating with me even though he's afraid of needles.
College Advisory Board
The College Advisory Board of the Penn-Jersey Region is a new initiative whose purpose is to collectively work with college and university administrations, faculty, staff, and students throughout the Region to achieve the following: enhance methods of recruitment, increase blood collections, track and trend what makes the blood drives successful on campuses, and focus the campaigns on fulfilling the American Red Cross Mission.
