Southern California Blood Services Region

Day or night, the Red Cross will send blood, provide laboratory services or expert medical consultation. Through the American Red Cross, hospitals in this community have the benefit of local service and a national network of experienced professionals. The Red Cross provides hospitals and patients with an array of transfusion support services including:

Lifesaving blood products delivered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year;
Physicians and technical experts available for consultation around the clock;
Products to meet special patient needs such as granulocytes and HLA-matched platelets;
Intraoperative autologous transfusion;
Reference laboratories that identify and locate compatible units of platelets and red cells for patients;
The American Rare Donor Program; a joint American Association of Blood Banks and Red Cross program that assists patients who need rare blood across the country and world;
Therapeutic apheresis and photopheresis services
Hematopoietic progenitor cell collection, processing, cryopreservation and storage services

Community Education

Community Education for the American Red Cross Southern California Blood Services Region provides programs and continuing education opportunities for medical and laboratory professionals covering a variety of topics including current issues in hospitals, blood centers, and research environments.

Blood Transfusion Medicine Lecture Series

This is a weekly lecture series of ongoing lectures given at the American Red Cross blood center in Pomona, California. It covers current transfusion theory and practices in transfusion medicine. The content follows the syllabus required for the ASCP SBB exam.

Specialist in Blood Bank Technology and Transfusion Medicine (SBBT/TM) Program

Located at the Red Cross blood center in Pomona, California this one year program incorporates all aspects of blood center operations and awards a certificate to graduates of the program, which allows them to sit for the Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) examination given by ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathology).
