Granulocyte Donation
Granulocytes are a type of white blood cell made by your body that help fight off infection.
Granulocyte donors are heroes who help save the lives of patients with life-threatening infections.
Some hospital patients do not make enough granulocytes to fight their own infections. Other patients have granulocytes that do not function normally and cannot fight infections.
Once there is a specific patient need and you are identified as a match, a Red Cross team member will call you with specific instructions and to schedule a granulocyte donation, which typically needs to happen quickly.
Time is of the essence since granulocytes must be transfused within 24 hours after collection.
