Seventh annual 12 Hours of Giving blood drive
PEORIA, Ill. (December 10, 2010) – Tis the season when everyone’s searching for the perfect gift that doesn’t break the bank and can be found without stepping foot into the mall, placing an order online or spending a dime. Give the gift of life this holiday season by donating blood or platelets through the American Red Cross at the seventh annual 12 Hours of Giving blood drive at the Par-a-dice Hotel in East Peoria from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on December 22.
“If just 10 percent of Americans give blood this holiday season, countless lives could be saved,” said Shelly Heiden, CEO the Heart of America Red Cross Blood Services region. “By donating blood, you can give patients in the Tri-County area and across the country more time to spend with their loved ones.”
The 12 Hours of Giving Blood Drive is supported by 12 special organizations, listed below, which join together to promote blood donation and give the perfect gift to patients in need this holiday season. The sponsors have helped recruit blood donors for the drive. Additionally, 91.5 WCIC will broadcast ongoing holiday music during the blood drive, and a friendly competition between 91.5 WCIC morning show hosts Scott Wheeler and Catherine Cambra will pit each host against the other in total number of blood donors that present to give blood in either of their names. At the end of the day, the winner will have bragging rights.
The 12 Hours of Giving celebrates the gift of life. Recipients of blood products are not able to take a holiday from needing lifesaving blood. They are in constant need of a healthy blood supply. Making the time to give blood this holiday season can change a life, even your own.
As a special thank you, all presenting blood and platelet donors in December will be entered into a daily raffle to win a $100 VISA gift card to help with post-holiday bills! Winners will be contacted after the promotions period ends. The raffle is available to presenting donors and/or residents within the Heart of America Red Cross region between 12/1/2010 and 12/31/2010 (excluding 12/25/2010). All presenting donors will also be entered into hourly drawings for prizes and eligible to win the grand prize –two airline tickets, courtesy of AirTran Airways, valid for travel in the continental United States including San Juan and Puerto Rico. Each presenting donor will also receive a Red Cross winter scarf to help them stay warm during the winter season along with a 2011 calendar. Breakfast pastries will be available and beginning at 10:30 a.m. Avanti’s Italian Restaurant will supply gondola sandwiches for the remainder of the blood drive.
All blood types are needed to help maintain a sufficient supply for patients in need, especially type O negative. Type O negative blood, the universal blood type, is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type, especially in emergency situations.
It only takes about an hour to donate blood, and in that hour, you can give patients in need a gift that will be treasured for years to come. The need for blood is constant and doesn’t pause for the holidays. By taking time to donate this winter, you can help the Red Cross ensure a stable blood supply for all patients who need blood products.
