Sault Ste. Marie “Battle of the Banks”

Local Banks join forces to help save lives

Sault Ste. Marie, MI – Sault Ste. Marie banks are out for blood in a friendly competition to help maintain a healthy blood supply during the tough summer months. The American Red Cross and area banks are coming together for the for the Sault Ste. Marie Battle of the Banks blood drive.

During the summer months, the need for blood typically increases while blood donations decrease. Many donors are busy or traveling, school is out of session and this past May and June, donations dropped to the lowest levels the Red Cross has seen during this timeframe in more than a dozen years. Demand for blood remained steady during this same period, which is why the Red Cross needs people—now more than ever—to roll up a sleeve and give as soon as possible. All types are needed, but O negative is in higher demand since it can be used to treat any patient.

“We are hoping to match last year’s total and collect 45 pints of blood again this year, “ said Biz Bauer, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative. “ We encourage all eligible donors to make an appointment to help save lives.”

The Battle of the Banks blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, at the First Church of Christ (300 West Spruce Street) in Sault Ste. Marie.

Four local banks are participating again in this year’s challenge to help save lives through blood collection. The banks participating are: Fifth Third Bank, First Community Bank, Northwestern Bank/Bank of Bay Harbor and PNC Bank.

As an added incentive for donors, everyone who comes out to donate blood at the Battle of the Banks blood drive has a chance to win a $250 Meijer gift card, a $125 Meijer gas card, and a $500 Best Buy gift card.  For more information about this and additional upcoming blood drives, call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org.
