Stoneridge Blood Donor Center celebrates
10 year anniversary,
nears 130,000th donation since opening
The American Red Cross is celebrating a milestone for the local Stoneridge Blood Donor Center in Gahanna area this February, marking 10 years of helping save lives, and its 130,000th donation through a special open house event on Sat. Feb. 8, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Since the donation center opened to the community on Feb. 9, 2004, through the January 15 of this year, there have been 59,023 blood donations and 66,748 platelet donations made. These donations have potentially touched the lives of more than 243,800 patients over 10 years. The site was opened in the Central Ohio area to help the American Red Cross provide blood products to 41 area hospitals across 27 Ohio counties.
“The donations made at the Stoneridge Donor Center can literally mean life for local patients,” said Rodney Wilson, communications manager for the American Red Cross Central Ohio Blood Services Region. Each year 4 million Americans need blood transfusions. In the Central Ohio Region, an average of 800 blood donors are needed each day to meet the need.
Countless Central Ohio residents have made Stoneridge Donor Center in Gahanna their place to give back. Regular donor John Weinheimer has given 39 gallons of blood (312 donations) and Stoneridge is his regular spot. Donor Robert Burgess also gives regularly at Stoneridge, inspired to donate ever since he was in a serious auto accident himself. Local residents are also able to volunteer time at the center, helping register donors and guide them through their process. There are many reasons to give blood or time, and Gahanna area residents have embraced the spirit of giving in their own back yard at the Stoneridge Donor Center for a decade.
The Stoneridge Donor Center is open seven days a week and receives about 20 donations a day on average. The center can bring in more than 7,300 donations a year with the potential to save 21,900 lives annually. Located in the Stoneridge Plaza shopping place in Gahanna, the center was strategically placed to serve a densely populated region on the east side of Columbus. “Donor centers help establish community involvement, an idea based on the tradition of neighbor helping neighbor. This spirit of giving allows a way to maintain an adequate blood supply for Central Ohio,” said Wilson.
To mark the 10 year anniversary, and the approach of the 130,000th blood donation given at Stoneridge Donor Center in February, the Red Cross will host an open house event on Sat. Feb. 8, from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the center at 337 Stoneridge Lane, Gahanna, Ohio 43230. The community is invited to stop in for free food, snacks, gifts and prizes, and learn more about how to get involved with the Red Cross in supporting the community.
