Give Thanks this Thanksgiving by Donating Blood

Badger-Hawkeye

November 3, 2010

This Thanksgiving, you can give a hospital patient the opportunity to spend another holiday with their family and friends, and get a special treat for yourself, by donating blood or platelets through the American Red Cross.

Throughout the year, dedicated donors take time out of their day to help strangers in need. During this season of giving thanks, the Red Cross is thanking all blood donors by offering a free pie to all presenting donors at participating blood donation centers during the week of Thanksgiving.

"As you reflect on the things you are most thankful for this holiday season, take the time to give blood," said Greg Novinska, CEO of the Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region. "In one hour, you can give a patient in need the gift of life."

While the need for blood is constant, the supply isn't and blood donation levels dip around the holidays. Give thanks this Thanksgiving by donating blood.

High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

About the American Red Cross

Governed by volunteers and supported by giving individuals and communities, the American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. While local hospital needs are always met first, the Red Cross also helps ensure no patient goes without blood no matter where or when they need it. In addition to providing nearly half of the nation's blood supply, the Red Cross provides relief to victims of disaster, trains millions in lifesaving skills, serves as a communication link between U.S. military members and their families, and assists victims of international disasters or conflicts.
