SHARE Charlotte, YMCA of Greater Charlotte host first #GIVINGTUESDAYCLT Blood Drives

November 9, 2017

This time of year is busy. Cooking. Shopping. Traveling. Spending time with family and friends. Giving thanks.

As the giving season kicks off, the American Red Cross invites you to take a break to give more life. You can help patients who need lifesaving blood transfusions by joining the Red Cross as we partner with Share Charlotte, YMCA of Greater Charlotte and Papa Murphy's Pizza for the #GIVINGTUESDAYCLT Blood Drives. Eligible blood donors are invited to give blood at any of nine Charlotte-area YMCA locations between Sunday, Nov. 26 and Tuesday, Nov. 28.

A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors are busy with holiday activities and travel. However, patients don’t get a holiday break from needing lifesaving transfusions. Donors who roll up a sleeve at the #GIVINGTUESDAYCLT Blood Drives can have an impact in fulfilling this need. Share Charlotte, YMCA of Greater Charlotte and Papa Murphy’s Pizza aim to collect 500 pints of blood at #GIVINGTUESDAYCLT Blood Drives, potentially saving the lives of up to 1,500 people.

All presenting blood donors will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a coupon for a free one-topping pizza from Papa Murphy’s Pizza.

Your blood donation may give a patient in need more time – and more holidays – with loved ones.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, from a computer or mobile device. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.
