Donor Stories

Girl Scout Cadette Abby Maycock, 14, isn't old enough to donate blood...yet. However she is making a difference in her community and is living up to the Girl Scout Promise to help people. On Wednesday, Sept. 8, she hosted an American Red Cross blood drive in Emporia, Kansas.

Maycock is part of Girl Scout Troop 37302 at Emporia Middle School. She planned all the details of this successful blood drive, and she even recruited donors to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award – the highest honor that a girl ages 11 to 14 may receive.

“This award represents a girl’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others,” said Alice Christian, assistant leader of Troop 37302. “I couldn’t be happier that Abby chose Red Cross for her project."

The drive made goal with 13 units of blood collected, including several first-time donors. These units may help save up to 39 lives. View photos from this drive on Flickr at http://bit.ly/bEcUdB
